To further understand The Five Tasks and Processes, consider how each might respond to a picture:

  1. Sense/Perception     |     Raw sensory information

One sees a collage of colors.  (One dimension)

  2. Explain/ Rationalization     |     Defines entities

One identifies a man, an afraid woman, a bracelet, a hood, eyes, etc. within the picture.  (Two dimensions)

  3. Sort/Association     |     Relates entities

One associates the hand over the woman’s mouth with the man.  One associates the woman’s fear with the hand over her mouth.  One associates the bracelet with the woman’s arm.  One associates the woman with a similar-looking woman one knows.  (Three dimensions)

  4. Plan/Expectation     |     Anticipates possibilities

One expects the woman to shout and expects the hand to muffle the shout; one expects the man to abduct the woman; one expects the woman to pull at the man’s wrist.  (Four dimensions)

  5. Act/Motivation     |     Enacts plans

One feels anger or hatred toward the man for his assault. One feels pity, protectiveness, or fear for the woman.  These emotions motivate one to stop the man and save the woman.  (Five dimensions)
